I’m passionate about the effect music can have on your customers.
One of my favourite chain stores sells all kinds of homeware and arts and crafts material. The music they play draws me in, slows me down, makes me feel homely and entices me to buy items I don’t need but look nice.
One of my son’s favourite places to be has an issue with young people loitering and causing trouble late at night. So they play music designed to create calm in their stores and to discourage the undesirables from hanging around too long because the music is very uncool.
One store wants to draw you in and make you spend money, the other wants you to leave quickly. Two very different reactions but they both play the exact same music - classical!
In my arty heaven the classical music wafts around me and puts me in a relaxed frame of mind. In my son’s store the classical music makes him feel like he doesn’t belong there and he’s soon outside listening to rap on his AirPods.
There’s no such thing as “the right music”. What works for one brand would repel the customers of another.
Are you playing it right? Or pushing people away? Let’s talk.
