Taking the current Spotify UK Top Ten as a snapshot, I'm seeing two big trends emerging.
Solo Artists
Every single one of the tracks in the top ten is from a solo artist. In fact, you have to go down to number 27 currently to find a band. It's hard to say for certain what's driving this, but social media must be playing a huge part in creating personalities out of solo singers and making it harder for bands to make an impact.
Globalisation
Ten years ago, half the UK top ten were British acts. In the current top ten there are just two. They're very good ones but it shows, as the world becomes smaller, British acts need to fight harder to be noticed.
There's also a real feel of the singer-songwriter making a return and every second new track seems to be country music flavoured. For that, I blame Taylor!
Give me a shout if you'd like to discuss how your music should be influenced by the current trends (and those of the future!)
